Have you seen the movie ‘In Bruges’ with Colin Farrell? And didn’t the city look so lame?
Well, it’s not.
First impression of Bruges: This town looks like it was made to resemble every non-European‘s stereotype of a typical European village! It’s so pretty it almost seems fake.
So, what did we do in this teeny tiny town? We…
Ate fries at the foot of Belfry. Belgian fries are seriously delicious, cheap and great to share with friends while you chat and people watch. The city centre is pretty touristy, but there are 2 fries stands that have been competing with each other for 100 years and they are right beside each other – try them both to compare 🙂
Played with the windmills near the river. It costs 2 euros to actually climb into it, but there’s a big, grassy hill that overlooks the town and it’s an EXCELLENT spot to take a break and pretend to me a windmill.
Walked around the gorgeous river….
Laughed at the swans sleeping in silly positions…
And marvelled at the artwork around town.
What I would have done better: Rented a bike. Biking around the windy cobblestone alleys looks like so much fun! Plus you have the chance to run over tourists in your way 😉
And a tip for the foodies! It wasn’t on my beloved Use-It map, but the walk from the windmills down Langstraat was a food paradise. There are so many cozy restaurants and pubs at decent prices, and judging by the amount of Flemish I heard, the locals like it too! If you want to be extra cheap like my friends and I, get some food from a food stall (like sausage and fries) and eat it in the alley. Yum!
